COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team earned the first No. 1 seed in the program's history and will serve as a host school for the first and second rounds of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The 3rd-ranked Terps will take on High Point on Friday, Nov. 12, at Ludwig Field at 5 p.m.
Maryland, which is one of 64 teams selected to play in the tournament, is making its 11th overall appearance and boasts a record of 17-2-2. The Panthers, 11-10-1 overall, earned their bid by winning the Big South championship.
"I'm pleased for our team and our program," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky, who is guiding the Terps to back-to-back tournament appearances for the first time since 2003-04. "The sting from yesterday's result with Wake Forest isn't quite gone, but certainly the recognition the national committee is giving us is a terrific compliment. It's a terrific honor and another jolt of confidence for this group.
"One of our themes this season has been to carry ourselves with humility and that doesn't change. We will humbly prepare for High Point, because they will come in chomping at the bit Friday night."
This will be the first-ever meeting between Maryland and High Point.
The other two teams selected to the College Park pod were Siena (17-3-1), which won the MAAC championship, and Georgetown (13-6-1), which earned an at-large bid out of the Big East. The Saints and Hoyas will play in the 8 p.m. game following the Maryland-High Point game.
Tickets for the double-header are $10 for adults and $5 for youth/senior. College student admission is $3 per ticket with valid student ID. Advance tickets are available through the Maryland ticket office by calling 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
The winners of the two Friday games will then meet in a second round match on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field. That winner will go on to face the winner of the Texas A&M pod which consists of the No. 4 seed Aggies, along with North Dakota State, Minnesota and Creighton.
