Shimel Leads Terps After Day 1

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Freshman Christine Shimel leads the Terrapins after the first day of play at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. She carded a one-over-par 73 good for a tie at the No. 16 position.
This is the first of five tournaments this spring season for Maryland. The tournament stretches through Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Clubs. Thirty-five teams will participate in the tournament, only one other from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Miami.
Shimel was even after holes 10 and 11 and used three birdies to remain just above par at the end of the day. Sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth registered a five-over-par 77. Hayley Brown finished the day just behind Hollandsworth with a 78.
Kerri Connolly and senior Carly Hunt finished just one stroke apart with 79 and 80 respectively.
Sarah Mooney from Augusta State currently leads the field with a four-under-par 68. The Jaguars also lead all 35 teams competing in the tournament. Augusta State was the only team who finished the day under par.
Shimel tees off first tomorrow for Maryland at 9:30 a.m. at the Oak Point Golf Course.
Four members of the Terps rank top-25 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after fall play: No. 5 Hollandsworth, No. 14 Shimel, No. 16 Connolly and No. 24 Brown. Varnas comes in at No. 30. Hunt ranks top-10 amongst ACC individuals who played 10 or fewer rounds.
Maryland earned five top-10 finishes in the fall, tying Boston College for the most amongst ACC schools. The Terps were also one of only four other conference programs claiming tournament titles.
In two weeks the Terps take part in the Administaff Lady Jaguar Invitational in Augusta, Ga., on March 7-8. Later in the month they go to Southern Pines, N.C., for the Pinehurst Challenge and are accompanied by ACC opponent's Florida State and N.C. State. The tournament runs through March 22-23.
Just before the ACC Championship takes place, Maryland goes to host school Miami's Canes and Cardinal Classic in Miami Lakes, Fla., on April 5-6. The conference championship tournament extends from April 16-18 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
NCAA regional tournaments tee off on May 6-8 and conclude with the championship May 18-21. Regional's will be held at one of three locations, Greenville, S.C. (East), Stanford, Calif. (West) and Bloomington, Ind. (Central). The Championship is in Wilmington, N.C., at the Country Club of Landfall.
