PRINCETON, N.J. - The Maryland water polo split its first two games at Saturday's ECAC Championship, downing Bucknell, 10-5, in opening-round action before falling to Princeton by the same score in the semifinals.
Sophomore Elina Goldenberg scored a career-high tying five goals to lead the Terps over the Bison. She scored the first two goals of the game as the Terrapins jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead and then held off a late Bucknell rally.
Shelby Reyes (three blocks), Rachel Stein (three blocks) and Shannon Simerly (four steals) led a strong defensive effort for the top-seeded Terps (6-2) against eighth-seeded Bucknell.
The Terps (6-3) got off to a slow start vs. fourth-seeded Princeton and never recovered. They fell behind 6-1 at halftime before closing the gap to 7-4 at the end of three periods, but were unable to get any closer.
Maryland will play at 1 p.m. Sunday in the third-place game.
