SAN DIEGO -
The Maryland water polo team struggled during the opening day of action at the Aztec Invitational, falling to UC San Diego, 12-7, and losing to ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount, 11-8, on Saturday.
The Terrapins went toe-to-toe with LMU, but the Lions (12-2) rallied from a 6-5 halftime deficit with four third-period goals.
Anne Scott had a game-high four goals for Loyola Marymount.
Shannon Simerly had three goals against UC San Diego in the opening game of the day, but it was not enough as the Titans jumped out to a 7-3 halftime lead and held off a late Terps rally.
Maryland closes out play in the tournament Sunday. The Terps will face tournament host and 14th-ranked San Diego State (11-8) at 11:45 a.m. PT before playing No. 3 California (16-5) at 3:30 p.m.
