COLLEGE PARK, Md. - College Park was recently ranked the ninth best College Sports Town in America by Forbes magazine.
To get their list of the Top College Sports Towns, Forbes consulted the 2009 final standings for the Directors' Cup, which takes into account the totality of a university's sports offerings. Football and basketball may be the big-ticket items, but a successful track-and-field program or tennis team can be enjoyable as well.
Forbes also took into account quality of life. They first used Coldwell Banker's Home Price Comparison Index, which lists the median price for a four-bedroom, two-bathroom, 2,200-square-foot home in each different market. They compared that with the median household income of the given market to get an affordability index.
Next, Forbes looked at statistics on public-school quality and crime rates, provided by NeighborhoodScout.com.
Here's what Forbes had to say about College Park: "College Park has a low crime rate coupled with affordable housing. The median price for a four-bedroom, two-bathroom, 2,200-square-foot home is $253,975 on a median household income of $66,117."
