RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Shannon Simerly and Elina Goldenberg scored two goals apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack as the Maryland water polo team posted a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Long Beach State in the opening game of Friday's Lancer Invitational.

The Terps, however, were unable to keep the momentum going, falling to Cal Baptist, 13-7, in the second game of the day.

Simone Lewis had the game-winner against LBSU, putting the Terps (9-10) ahead 10-8 with 4:26 left in the game.

The 49ers (5-12) got it back within a goal, but scored with just nine seconds to go in the game.

Maryland overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit with four goals in the third period. Christine Goetsch's goal tied it, at 5-all with 2:59 to go in the quarter and Simerly gave the Terps a 6-5 lead, their first of the game, with 0:49 left.

LBSU tied the game just before the quarter ended on one of Lauren Sieprath's game-high three goals, but the Terps took the lead for good at 7-6 on Alex Gurnee's marker with 7:26 to go in the game.

Shelby Reyes went the distance in net for the Terps, recording nine saves vs. the 49ers.

Maryland never led against Cal Baptist (15-9) which got a game-high four goals from Jennifer Grutz and three apiece from Chelsea Gentry and Collette Brown.

Jessica Ernst's score at 6:04 of the third period cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Lancers tallied the next three goals.

Allie Beck had a team-high two goals, including one which closed the gap to 9-6 with 4:46 left in the third period, but Cal Baptist, which is playing host to the two-day event, scored twice early in the final quarter to put the game out of reach.

Maryland is scheduled to play two games Saturday. The Terps face Concordia (Calif.) at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday and Azusa Pacific at 7:30 p.m.
