Shimel Leads Pinehurst Field; Terps in Second

PINEHURST, N.C. - Freshman Christine Shimel leads a field of 93 individuals after two rounds of competition at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C. Shimel's efforts helped Maryland to a second place finish after the first two rounds of competition.
After improving her performance by three strokes in the second round, Shimel took sole possession of first place. The Kennett Square, Pa., native is currently five-under-par with a 139 (71-68). Two players, Olivia Higgins and Lacey Agnew, occupy second, three strokes behind Shimel. Only six competitors are either even or under par.
In the first round of play, freshman Hayley Brown carded a 74 ranking in the top-20. Sophomore Jessie Hollandsworth earned a 76 in both rounds to tie for 31st place. Teammates Carly Hunt and Kerri Connolly each saw improvement during their second round. Hunt shaved one stroke off her first one results for a 153 (77-76) while Connelly improved by two for a 176 (79-77).
The third and final round of competition will commence on Tuesday, March 23 at 9 a.m. ET. Maryland joins 17 other teams in competition on Monday and Tuesday on the Pinehurst #6 Course. Results will be posted online at www.cofcsports.com by 9 p.m. ET each day.
The Terps have competed at the Pinehurst Challenge the last couple of years with their best showing coming in the 2005-06 season when they claimed the tournament crown. They defeated 18 other teams with a 917 on the Pinehurst #8 Course.
Last year the tournament was cancelled due to rain.
Other teams participating in the tournament are Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Illinois, James Madison, Minnesota, UNC Greensboro, N.C. State, Princeton, Richmond, SMU, Western Carolina and Wofford.
