LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Maryland water polo team lost a heartbreaker Sunday, falling to Bucknell, 15-14, in sudden-death overtime in its first CWPA Southern Division game of the season.
The Bison (12-7, 4-0 CWPA) scored three times in the final period, including one on a penalty shot with 11 seconds left in regulation to send the game to extra time.
Neither team scored in the first overtime, but traded goals in the second one.
"In the first period of overtime, we had a lot of opportunities to put the game out of reach," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We just weren't able to convert."
Meghan Powers, who scored a career-best four times, put the Terrapins (11-11, 0-1) up 14-13 with a goal on the first possession of the second overtime period.
But Bucknell tied it at 14-all less than a minute later on Shana Palencia's goal and won the game just over two minutes into sudden-death overtime on a goal by Hallie Kennan, who scored five times.
"We have to give Bucknell credit," Salyer said. "They played hard and smart, and took advantage of their opportunities. But we made mistakes that are correctable so hopefully the next time we're in that situation we'll be able to get the win."
Maryland led for much of the contest, jumping out to a 6-3 lead after one period before Bucknell rallied to tie it at 8-all at halftime.
Allison Campbell matched a career high with five goals. Ally Beck also chipped in two.
Rachel Stein, who played net after halftime, registered a career-high 13 blocks.
Game Notes: Campbell's five goals gives her 30 on the season which ties the freshman for the team lead with Shannon Simerly .. Campbell has scored 10 goals over the last three games ... Beck, who had two goals, has scored multiple times in three of the last four games.
