Maryland Knocks Off George Washington

March 31, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Four periods are just not enough for the Maryland water polo team lately as the Terps needed overtime for the second straight game.

After losing in sudden-death overtime to Bucknell on Sunday, the Terps needed a gritty performance Wednesday evening to knock off CWPA Southern Division rival George Washington, 5-4, in extra time.

Ally Beck had the game winner in the first overtime, scoring on a penalty shot after Alex Gurnee drew a foul.

"It was a good win for us," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "When we had the opportunity to put the game away we did."

Meghan Powers had two goals to lead the offensive attack for Maryland (12-11, 1-1). Allison Campbell and Simone Lewis each chipped in a goal.

Allison Peotter had a game-high three goals for the Colonials (7-11, 0-3), who sent the game to overtime with two fourth-period goals by their sophomore attacker.

Charlotte Schou had nine blocks for George Washington, while Shelby Reyes (four blocks) and Rachel Stein (six blocks) split time in net for Maryland. Stein had a couple keys saves at the end of overtime as the Colonials tried to send it to a second extra session.

"We played well and they played well, but that was probably our best defensive effort of the year," Salyer said. "After giving up 15 goals (to Bucknell), I'm pleased that we only gave up four in five periods of action."

Maryland is off until Saturday, April 10 when the Terps play at Princeton in another division game.

Game Notes: The Terps have won four of their last six games ... Maryland is now 3-1 in one-goal games this season ... Powers has six goals over the last two games.
