COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Athletics invites all stakeholders to participate in an open discussion regarding the University's draft self-study report to the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification on Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m. in Heritage Hall in Comcast Center.
The NCAA Division I Athletics Certification program is the athletic version of the academic accreditation process common to universities. Its purpose is to help ensure integrity in the institution's athletics operations. Maryland is currently engaged in an 18-month long, campus-wide effort to study its athletics program in areas including: academic integrity, governance and commitment to rules compliance, and commitment to gender, diversity and student-athlete well-being.
The committee responsible for the self-study report is chaired by Dr. Jeffrey C. Huskamp, Vice President and CIO, and includes various members of the institution's faculty and staff, athletics department personnel, student-athletes and boosters. For additional information regarding the NCAA Certification process, the committee, and to review a copy of the draft self-study report, click here http://www.umterps.com/compliance/md-compliance-ncaacert.html
Maryland was "fully certified" (the NCAA's highest rating) following its first certification self-study in 1995 and its second in 2000. The current self-study is Maryland's third cycle in the NCAA's certification process.
In Fall 2010, an external team of reviewers will conduct a three-day, on-campus evaluation visit. Those reviewers will be peers from other colleges, universities and/or conference offices and will report their findings to the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification. The Committee on Athletics Certification will then determine the institution's certification status and announce the decision publicly in February 2011.
