
Maryland Splits On Opening Day Of Elite Eight

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Maryland women's water polo team will play for third place in the Elite Eight Tournament after splitting a pair of games during Saturday's opening day of action.
Freshman Allison Campbell scored a career-high five goals to power the Terps (8-4) to a 13-10 victory over Harvard in the opening round, but 11th-ranked Hartwick (13-4) got four goals from Jessica McKee and three from Christina Evans to upend Maryland, 11-8, in the semifinals.
The Terps will face tournament host and 18th-ranked Indiana at 12:20 p.m. Sunday for third place.
Maryland had to fight off a rally from Harvard (7-4), which tied the game at 7-all heading into the final frame.
The Terps scored six goals in the fourth period to pull away for the win.
Ita Barton-Kettleborough and Devan Kennifer had three goals apiece to pace the Harvard offensive attack.
Meghan Powers (3), Jessica Ernst (2) and Shannon Simerly (2) all scored multiple goals for the Terps.
The Maryland offense went cold during the second and third quarters of the Hartwick game, netting just one goal. Powers and Simone Lewis led the Maryland offense with two goals apiece.
Shelby Reyes and Rachel Stein split time in net for the Terps in both games.
