COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland and Notre Dame have reached an agreement to play a football game during the 2011 season at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins.
The Terrapins and Fighting Irish will square off on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the second-ever meeting between the schools.
"We are pleased to provide our fans a premier national-caliber game so close to our campus," director of athletics Deborah A. Yow said. "It will be a statement game for our Terps football program."
It won't be the first time Maryland has played in an NFL stadium.
The Terps have never played a game in FedEx Field, but faced Navy in 2005 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and will meet the Midshipmen there in 2010. Maryland also played a number of games in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium during the 1980s and `90s.
"This is great for our program and our profile," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "This is a game our fans will be really excited about and our players will enjoy."
Notre Dame will serve as the home team because it has an agreement with Fed-Ex Field for that date. The Terps are scheduled to have seven games in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium during 2011.
Tickets for the Notre Dame game will be made available though the Maryland Athletics ticket office once the complete 2011 schedule is released next spring by the Atlantic Coast Conference office. First priority will be granted to Terrapin Club members who are season-ticket holders in both 2010 and 2011.
"It is a privilege for FedExField to host of one of the most storied programs in college football history and match it against a university with a strong and successful local following," Washington Redskins chief marketing officer Mitch Gershman said. "This game will be an exciting event for our region as all eyes will be on FedExField."
The only other meeting between the teams came in the 2002 Kickoff Classic, when the Fighting Irish topped the Terps, 22-0, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
