COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Simone Lewis scored three of her career-high four goals in the first period to lead a balanced offensive attack as the Maryland water polo team rolled past George Washington, 16-7, Friday evening.

After George Washington's Monica Hanson tied the game at one goal apiece, Lewis scored three straight times in less than two minutes to give the Terps a 4-1 lead.

"Simone really stepped up tonight," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "She made some huge plays for us."

Maryland's 16 goals from 10 different players were the most this season.

"We had a really good start," Salyer said. "It all started with our defense. A lot of girls made a lot of good plays tonight."

Goalies Shelby Reyes and Rachel Stein both had four saves each for the Terps as they never trailed from the opening whistle.

Shannon Simerly Ally Beck and Allison Campbell each had two goals to help get the Terps (13-12, 2-2) back to .500 in CWPA Southern division play.

The Maryland defense held leading scorer Marissa Stamler to just one goal in five attempts. Six other George Washington (7-13, 0-5) players scored. Charlotte Schou led the GW defense with eight saves.

Maryland will look to ride the momentum of Friday's win in its five-game homestand. The Terps will face No. 7 Michigan (24-6) at 10 a.m. Saturday before facing division rivals Princeton (15-8, 3-1) and Bucknell (12-8, 4-1). Maryland will face the Tigers at 7 p.m. Saturday and the Bison at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Terps and Wolverines will also play at 10 a.m. Sunday.
