Terps Pounced by Tigers

April 17, 2010

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Shannon Simerly scored two of Maryland's four goals under an aggressive game plan, but mental errors and defensive lapses gave way to the team's 13-4 loss to Princeton (16-8, 4-1) on Saturday.

Princeton goalie Kristen Ward recorded 10 saves and held off the onslaught of shots by Maryland (13-14, 2-3) as the Terps fell back under .500 in CWPA Southern division play.

"We weren't mentally prepared," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We didn't have the intensity level or confidence level that we needed."

Princeton took advantage of Maryland's mistakes by scoring twice on penalty goals in the first half. Lauren Brunner, Phoebe Champion and Brittany Zwimer each had hat tricks for the Tigers as they controlled the game's pace from the start.

After Carly Hoshko scored Maryland's first goal with 1:51 remaining in the first period, cutting the Tigers' lead to 2-1, the Terps never got back in rhythm and would trail by as many as 10 goals late in the first half.

With two games left on the team's five-game homestand, Maryland looks to rebound and gain momentum before the postseason.

"We still have opportunities left in the season to make this a positive year. We're going to try and come back and get a new start," said Salyer. "We'll see if we can build our confidence to the division championship next weekend and then the conference championship."

Capping out the homestand, Maryland will host a rematch against Michigan (26-6) on Sunday at 10 a.m. before playing division rival Bucknell (12-8, 4-1) at 2 p.m.
