COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In Maryland's final regular season home match of the 2010 season, the Terps and senior captain Shannon Simerly fell just short of defeating CWPA Southern rival Bucknell, as they lost 11-10 on Sunday.
Ally Beck, Christine Goetsch and Meghan Powers each scored twice for the Terps (13-16, 2-4), but Bucknell (13-9, 5-1) and leading scorer Hallie Kennan proved to be too much.
"We competed hard. We battled from beginning to end," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "I'm pleased with the way we finished up the weekend, the effort they put in and the confidence that they finished with."
Just as they had done in the matinee game against Michigan, the Terps found themselves locked in a tie, this time with the division leading Bison, at the half, 6-6. But unlike the prior game, Maryland opened up the second half shooting on all cylinders as they led 9-7 with 1:04 remaining in the third period thanks to two goals by Powers and a third by Goetsch.
But Bucknell would fight back to take the lead once and for all as Amanda Skonezney and Valentina Rozas each netted their second goals of the afternoon and Kennan scored her second via a controversial penalty goal which was twice called back.
Shelby Reyes, who played net all four quarters for the Terps, registered a career-high tying 13 blocks.
Lost in the afternoon's tense atmosphere was the celebration of Shannon Simerly's career. The lone senior on the 2010 squad, Simerly scored seven goals during the Terps' five-game homestand and will be missed by her teammates and coaches.
"Shannon has done a great job for four years," Salyer said. "She has been an offensive firepower for us and is one of those girls that has a knack for putting the ball in the back of the cage. We'll miss her but she's had a great career that she can be proud of for the rest of her life."
Though Maryland's regular season is over, the Terps will travel to Princeton, N.J. for the CWPA Southern Division Championship starting Saturday.
