Maryland Can't Match Michigan

April 18, 2010

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Shelby Reyes recorded 11 blocks and Shannon Simerly scored twice to lead the Terps to a 5-5 halftime tie with Michigan, but the Wolverines controlled the remaining periods and pulled away to an 11-7 victory on Sunday.

Led by Alex Adamson's five blocks, No. 7 Michigan (27-6) tightened up on defense and allowed only two second-half goals by the Terps (13-15).

From the opening whistle, it was clear that Maryland sought revenge from Saturday morning's 9-3 defeat at the hands of the Wolverines.

The first half was back-and-forth, as both teams were within reach. With 1:10 remaining in the half, the Terps gained their first lead of the game, 5-4, thanks to Simerly's second goal on the day. But with only 14 seconds left in the half, Michigan tied the game once again, via a fast break goal by Robertson.

"We came out with a lot more confidence today and a lot more energy and emotion," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We did a really nice job to make it a tied game at the half against a top-10 team."

Unfortunately for the Terps, the Wolverines proved their ranking, as they pulled away in the second half. Robertson added three more goals in the third and fourth periods as Maryland's Rachel Stein, six saves, relieved Reyes.

"We wanted to play them [Michigan] twice in one weekend. We'd be better because of it," Salyer said. "Now we need to come back and play Bucknell."

The Terps will close out their weekend homestand and attempt to avenge a 15-14 overtime loss to division rival Bucknell (12-8, 4-1) at 2 p.m.
