Women's Golf, Men's XC Earn Team GPA Awards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Women's golf won its first Team GPA Award, while men's cross country won for the third time in a row, as both teams were honored Sunday at the President's Cup Brunch held at the Riggs Alumni Center.

The President's Cup Team GPA awards are given for the highest overall cumulative grade-point average in the prior two semesters.

The women's golf team posted a combined average of 3.32, with gymnastics and volleyball just behind among female teams. The men's cross country team won its third straight President's Cup Team Award after posting a 3.18 GPA, followed by tennis and swimming & diving.

Also awarded on Sunday were CHAMPS/Lifeskills Cup team honors to the field hockey and wrestling teams. The awards are given to groups that distinguished in academic and athletic excellence, commitment to career and personal development and commitment to service.

A number of individual awards for community service, athletics achievement and academic success were also presented at the brunch.

The event was co-sponsored by the M Club and the Terrapin Club.

* Talbot T. Speer Award (leadership, scholarship and all-around ability) - Hudson Taylor, Wrestling
* Charles P. McCormick Award (Baltimore area senior contributing the most to athletics) - Caitlyn McFadden, Women's Lacrosse
* John W. Guckeyson Award (scholarship, leadership and superior athletic ability) - Greivis Vasquez, Men's Basketball
* Founders Award (outstanding athletic ability, academic character, citizenship) - Brandi George, Gymnastics
* James H. Kehoe Award (Maryland senior symbolizing commitment, dedication, spirit and the will to win) - Karissa Taylor, Women's Lacrosse
* Silvester Watch (athlete who typifies the best in college athletics) - Eric Hayes, Men's Basketball; Brian Phipps, Men's Lacrosse; Kevin Tangney, Men's Soccer
* Maryland Watch (male athlete of the year) - Brian Phipps, Men's Lacrosse
* Suzanne Tyler Award (female athlete of the year) - Caitlyn McFadden, Women's Lacrosse; Katie O'Donnell, Field Hockey
* Geary F. Eppley Award (senior letterwinner with highest scholastic average) - Aleksandar Damjanic, Men's Swimming
* Charles H. Beebe Jr. Award (letterwinner with highest career GPA) - Lori Bjork, Women's Basketball

ICA Community Service Awards (Student-athletes who excelled in public service to the community) - Kristen Batts (Women's Track & Field), Ally Beck (Water Polo), Lori Bjork (Women's Basketball), Nolan Carroll (Football), Tommy Friscia (Men's Track & Field), Brandi George (Gymnastics), Charles Golden (Wrestling), Allison Krikorian (Gymnastics), Adrian Moten (Football), Hudson Taylor (Wrestling).
