The Maryland women's golf team was selected to partake in the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship Regional this evening by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee. The Terrapins will be heading west for the West Regional hosted by Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., at the Stanford Golf Course May 6-8.
This will be the first time since 2007 that the Maryland squad will head to the regional tournament as a team. Last season sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth made the cut as an individual finishing tied for 11th at the East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. The then-freshman carded a seven-over-par 217 (76-71-70) on the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Maryland is coming off of their best finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference in three years. The Terps placed sixth with a 915 (299-305-311). Senior Carly Hunt led the Terrapins finished tied for 16th. Maryland's first day score of 299 was the program's best round since the carded a 290 in 2004. The Terps have also claimed nine top-10 finishes including two tournament titles, one at the Spider Invitational and another at the Canes and Cardinal Classic.
Hollandsworth continues to lead the Terrapins on the green, averaging a 74.52. She carded a career-low round 68 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate where she claimed the tournament crown. Another underclassman helps lead the team, freshman Christine Shimel. Shimel has had multiple top-five finishes coming in second twice this season. She also has a career low-round of 68 which she earned at the Pinehurst Challenge.
The West Regional field is made up of UCLA, Alabama, Arizona, Ohio State, Virginia, Stanford, LSU, California, Texas A&M, Texas, UC Davis, Arkansas, UNLV, San Jose State, San Francisco, Idaho, UC Irvine, Iowa State, Colorado State, Oral Roberts, Texas State, Pennsylvania and Portland State. Seven ACC schools were selected including Maryland.
Three regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies will apply.
A total of 369 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
The championships finals will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall and will be hosted by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
