COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Shelby Reyes had a game-high 14 blocks and Meghan Powers scored a hat trick, but it wasn't enough for the Terps (14-18) as they lost in overtime to Hartwick (26-4), 13-12, in the first round of the CWPA Eastern Championship on Friday.
"I'm really proud of these girls," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "They gave themselves chances to win and played with a lot of heart and passion. They played the best they have all season and that's all I can ask for."
With 2:27 remaining in the first period, Maryland broke open the scoreless game thanks to a power play goal by senior Shannon Simerly. After a goal by No. 11 Hartwick's Kirsten Hudson re-tied the game at one goal apiece, Carly Hoshko's score with 1:50 left gave the Terps the lead once again. Afterwards, however, it was all Hawks as Hartwick point led 11-6 early in the fourth period.
Yet with 5:03 to go in the final period, Maryland began chipping away. The Terps scored five consecutive goals, culminating with Powers' game-tying goal with only 1:13 remaining.
"[Meghan] Powers was energetic," said Salyer. "She's playing the way she is capable of. She had a huge impact on the game and I'm really proud of her."
Unfortunately, the Terps fared far worse in overtime as the Hawks and Jessica McKee outscored Maryland, 2-1. McKee's seven goals were a game high.
Shelby Reyes led in goal with a game-high 14 blocks in what Coach Salyer described as a near game-saving performance.
"Reyes was playing absolutely out of her mind," said Salyer. "She saved [us] all day today and had absolutely the best game of her season. She kept us in the game."
Maryland will play sixth-seeded Brown at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
The winner of that game will face either No. 4 Bucknell or No. 8 Harvard on Sunday in a battle for fifth place.
Tickets are priced at $13 for a one-day pass and $25 for a tournament pass. Tickets are available for purchase one hour prior to the first game of each day. Parking is available in the Stadium Drive Garage. Click here to view a campus parking map.
