Canes and Cardinal Classic Stats through two rounds
MIAMI LAKES, Fla. -
After two rounds of play at Don Shula's Golf Resort during the Canes and Cardinal Classic, the Maryland women's golf team holds on to the lead with a 609 (302-307). Freshman Christine Shimel holds on to second place overall with a three-over-par 147.
During the second round Maryland led all teams in par four and par five scoring. The Terps tied with Troy University in eagles with one each.
The Terps were also first after the first 18 holes. Sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth carded a 73 in the first round and was just three strokes away from the leader of the pack, Hanna Ek from Akron. Shimel was in fifth after the initial 18 with a 74. Hollandsworth and Shimel swapped places after the second round as Shimel recorded one of the only eagles on the day and came in just one over par for a 73. Hollandsworth registered a 79.
Now leading all individuals is Kristen Hill of Akron with a 143, just four strokes ahead of Shimel.
Joining her teammates in the top-20 is Carly Hunt with a 12-over-par 156, good for a 17th place tie. During the first round Hunt scored a 38 on the front and back nine for a four-over-par 76. Freshman Hayley Brown is just outside the first 20 with at 21st place after carding a 157 (79-78) through 36 holes.
Rounding out the Terps' lineup is junior Kerri Connolly who shaved six strokes off her first round score. Connolly used a 77 in the second round to improve her positioning by 11 spots to a tie for No. 28.
Maryland looks to defend its positioning tomorrow morning starting at 8 a.m. ET.
The Terrapins have earned back-to-back second place finishes and want to finish strong heading in to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship which starts on April 16. They have earned one other first place finish this season, taking the crown for the third straight time at the Spider Invitational in Richmond, Va., during the fall.
The Canes and Cardinal Classic is co-hosted by the University of Miami and the University of Louisville at Don Shula's Golf Resort. The course is a par-72 through 6,223 yards.
A total of 10 teams are slated to compete. Joining Maryland is Akron, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Kansas State, Louisville, Miami, Penn State, Florida Gulf Coast, Texas Pan American and Troy.
Maryland competed in the tournament last year and came out with a 10th place finish. They recorded a team low-round 312 during the first day of competition. Hollandsworth led the Terps at the Canes and Cardinal tournament in 2009 with an 11-over-par 227, tying for the 10th position.
Following the tournament in Miami, the Terps have 10 days to prepare for the ACC championship tournament at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
