COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Simone Lewis earned Player of the Game honors after scoring a hat trick as the Maryland water polo team won its final match of the season, defeating Harvard, 12-11, on Sunday to earn seventh place in the 2010 CWPA Eastern Championship.
Behind a well-balanced offensive attack, the seventh-seeded Terps (15-19) scored 12 goals for the second day in a row as, this time, they held on against the No. 8 seed Crimson Tide (12-15).
Aside from Lewis' three goals, Maryland got strong play out of Ally Beck, Christine Goetsch and Shannon Simerly, all of whom scored two goals apiece.
"We played with a little bit more energy today," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "Push came to shove and we outplayed them."
The majority of the game was played with a back-and-forth intensity, as there were six ties and seven lead changes. But Lewis' second goal of the game with 1:01 remaining in the second period put the Terps ahead for good, 7-6.
Maryland goalkeeper Shelby Reyes finished a strong weekend with a solid second-half, making five blocks and ensuring the win in the team's final match.
"It is good to finish the season with a win," said Salyer. "[Now] we'll start getting ready for next year."
Devan Kennifer and Laurel McCarthy led the Crimson Tide with three goals and six blocks, respectively.
Top-seeded Michigan captured the CWPA Eastern crown with a 7-5 win over No. 3 seed Indiana in the final game of the day.
The Wolverines gain an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship (May 14-16 in San Diego) with the victory.
