Terps Advance In National Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Members of the Maryland field hockey program, both current and former, are competing in the semifinal rounds of USA Field Hockey's national championships in Virginia Beach, Va. Friday.
Current Terrapins Katie O'Donnell, Alicia Morawski, Ali McEvoy and Melissa Vassalotti are all playing for the Mid-Atlantic senior team, along with former Terrapins Brianna Davies, Alexis Pappas and Nicole Muracco and current assistant coach Dina Rizzo. Terrapin technical director Tjerk van Herwaarden will be coaching the Mid-Atlantic squad as it faces off the team from New Jersey Friday at 6 p.m. for a spot in Saturday's championship game. Terp alum Meredith Long is competing on the Senior New Jersey team.
"This is such an amazing opportunity for all the Terps that are playing in High Performance hockey," Rizzo said. "The level of hockey is so great with the make-up of great high school, college and national level athletes. Being here and competing is awesome for the Terps heading into preseason."
Former Terrapin Keli Smith is on the Senior Pennsylvania team and Sara Silvetti is with the Senior Boston team. The Pennsylvania team will also be playing for a spot in Saturday's championship.
Current Terrapins Janessa Pope, Tara Zollinger and Jill Witmer will all be competing in the junior competition with the Pennsylvania team. The trio will face off against incoming freshman Natalie Hunter and the New Jersey squad for a spot in the juniors championship Saturday at 4 p.m.
