GREENSBORO, N.C. - Two University of Maryland women's golfers, graduate student Carly Hunt and freshman Christine Shimel were named to the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic team as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Shimel was an All-ACC selection, along with teammate Jessica Hollandsworth. The Kennett Square, Pa., native took three top-10 finishes, going outside of the top-25 once. Shimel earned two second place finishes, first at the Pinehurst Challenge and again at the Canes and Cardinal Classic. In her postseason debut, Shimel finished in the top-20 at the ACC Tournament and claimed the second best score on the team at the NCAA West Regional with an 18-over-par 231. The Maryland freshman ranks top-10 in the conference, with a season average of 74.84 and is second all-time in the Maryland record books for season average.
This season Hunt earned two top-20 finishes, one in the top 10. She carded a career-low round 72 at ACC Women's Golf Championship on the first day and finished the tournament tied for 16th with a 14-over-par 229 (72-78-77), a team low. Hunt again led the team at the NCAA West Regional with a 16-over-par 229.
