CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Three University of Maryland women's golfers, graduate student Carly Hunt and freshmen Christine Shimel and Hayley Brown were named 2009-10 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar recipients.
Teams for Division I, II & III were announced today with a total of 494 women's collegiate golfers recognized with this high honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Shimel was an All-ACC selection, along with teammate Jessica Hollandsworth. The Kennett Square, Pa., native took three top-10 finishes, going outside of the top-25 once. Shimel earned two second place finishes, first at the Pinehurst Challenge and again at the Canes and Cardinal Classic. In her postseason debut, Shimel finished in the top-20 at the ACC Tournament and claimed the second best score on the team at the NCAA West Regional with an 18-over-par 231. The Maryland freshman ranks top-10 in the conference, with a season average of 74.84 and is second all-time in the Maryland record books for season average.
This season Hunt earned two top-20 finishes, one in the top 10. She carded a career-low round 72 at ACC Women's Golf Championship on the first day and finished the tournament tied for 16th with a 14-over-par 229 (72-78-77), a team low. Hunt again led the team at the NCAA West Regional with a 16-over-par 229.
Brown competed in all six tournaments and earned a spring low-round of 74 at the Pinehurst Challenge. She took two top-20 finishes, tying for 16th at the Canes and Cardinal Classic, helping the Terps take the tournament crown, and tying for 17th at the Hoya Invitational.
