GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Senior Katie O'Donnell and sophomore Megan Frazer were picked to the Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team the league announced Wednesday. The Terrapins, who went undefeated in ACC play in 2009, were picked to finish second in the conference.
O'Donnell and Frazer were two of the 11 selections made by the league's coaches. ACC coaches also voted on the Predicted Order of Finish. North Carolina was chosen to finish first in the conference, while the Terps received a first-place vote.
O'Donnell, the 2009 Honda Award winner, was last year's ACC Offensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive year and womensfieldhockey.com's Player of the Year. Late in the 2009 season, she became the ACC's all-time assist leader with 74.
Frazer helped lead the Terrapins to their second consecutive ACC crown over Virginia last season. After Maryland fell behind early on in the championship game, O'Donnell and Nicole Muracco each scored to knot the game at two. Frazer scored the game-winning goal in overtime off of a penalty corner.
The Terrapins return four starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2009 season. Maryland went 23-1 and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. Head coach Missy Meharg is entering her 23rd season at the helm of the Terrapin program.
Maryland will open its 2010 season Friday, Aug. 27 at Drexel, who it played in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Terps and the Dragons will take the field in Philadelphia at 7 p.m.
This Friday, August 20, the Terrapins will face off against Penn State in a preseason scrimmage at 11 a.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland will play a Red/White game Saturday at 9 a.m. Both events are open to fans wishing to attend. For Friday's scrimmage, fans can park in the metered lot XX, which is two blocks from the Complex on Paint Branch Ave.
