Senior Katie O'Donnell of the Maryland field hockey team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's first Player of the Week of the 2010 season the league announced Tuesday. O'Donnell's two-goal, three-assist performance helped lead the No. 2 Terps to a 2-0 opening weekend.
In Maryland's first game, at No. 11 Drexel Friday night, O'Donnell assisted on the Terps' first goal of the year. Sophomore Megan Frazer cleared the ball to O'Donnell at midfield from in front of the Dragons' goal. O'Donnell took control and passed up to sophomore Janessa Pope for the 1-0 score. O'Donnell scored herself minutes later as she deflected in a penalty corner shot. The Terrapins went on to win 4-2.
The Terps played Villanova Sunday afternoon in the Temple Invitational tournament. O'Donnell put the Terrapins on the board with a penalty stroke to put Maryland on the board.
Currently O'Donnell leads all active NCAA players with 215 career points, career goals with 69 and 77 career assists, which is also an ACC record.
O'Donnell and the Terrapins play host to No. 16 Old Dominion Friday at 7 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game will be broadcast live at WMUCSports.com and live stats will be available.
