McBain, Scott Lead Terps Over Penn

Sept. 10, 2010

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by a double-double from sophomore Remy McBain and a strong offensive performance by junior Lisa Scott, the Maryland (6-1) volleyball team shut down NCAA qualifier Penn (2-2) in a convincing three-set sweep. The Terps extended their winning streak to six and remain undefeated at home.

"We played really solid tonight," head coach Tim Horsmon said. "We had good passing and serving. We let Penn get in a few runs there but I think if we keep doing what we are doing and improving on some of the little things, we're definitely on the right track."

The Terps return to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against Fairfield (1-7) and again at 7:00 p.m. vs. Tulane (1-6). All Maryland matches will be streamed live on umterps.com. There is a parking advisory for tomorrow's matches due to the Maryland vs. Morgan State football game. Fans planning to attend Saturday's games should park in Terrapin Trail Garage (TTG), adjacent to Comcast Center. Parking will be free in TTG prior to 12:00 noon. After 12:00 noon, all fans will be charged $15 to park.

McBain used a career-best 13 digs and 34 assists for her third career and second season double-double. Scott, who finished with a career-high .750 attack percentage at the end of the match, had been questionable prior to the start of the match.

"We didn't know if we were going to have Lisa tonight," head coach Tim Horsmon said. "She was in a boot right up until warm-ups. Her performance tonight is a tribute to her mental toughness and that is a great thing to see."

During the first set the Terrapins matched their season-high .444 attack percentage led by five kills from Scott and counting only two errors. They started out on a 4-0 run sparked by a kill from freshman Mary Cushman. Penn made a run of their own but never made it closer than two points. Another 4-0 run by the Terps helped put the first set away. Maryland's largest lead was nine points before the Quakers made a last ditch effort before junior Maddi Lee could close it out, 25-16.

Penn started to find their groove in the second stanza. The score tied five times and swapped leads on three occasions. Maryland held the lead at 11-7 but a 5-1 run would knot the score at 12. A kill from Penn's Julia Swanson gave the Quakers a push. The Terrapins wouldn't allow the lead for long as it was following by four straight kills from four different Terps, forcing a Penn timeout. Scott gave Maryland the advantage, claiming the second set, 25-19.

The first 10 points saw four tied scores. A Maryland squad that was clean at home was determined to stay that way. Twice the Terrapins went on 4-0 runs, widening the gap between them and the competition. They ended it on a 6-1 streak after Lee, the ACC's leader in service aces, served one up to the Quakers. Maryland won, 25-15.

Lee tied her season-high marks in both service aces and kills with four and eight, respectively. Senior libero Bethany Springer was just shy of her season digs mark of 19 collecting 16 this evening. She also added four assists.

Penn was led by Kristen Etterbeek and Amanda Pacheco with eight kills each.

Maryland has never met Fairfield. The Terps are currently 2-0 against teams they have never faced, defeating both Utah Valley and Nevada in the season's opening weekend. The Terrapins and Tulane have only one recorded match, in 2008 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La. Maryland dropped the match 3-0.
