Postgame quotes following Maryland's 62-3 win over Morgan State.
Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen
On today's game:
"We could have gone out and just not been into the game, but that wasn't the case at all. Coming off a very emotional game Monday and on a short week of practice, I knew that Morgan [State] was going to come in here fired up and our team met the challenge and I was proud of them."
On injuries suffered in the game:
"We got nicked up a little bit. C.J. Brown broke his collarbone, probably will be out eight weeks. Danny O'Brian has a sprained ankle; I'm not sure how severe that is yet. Marcus Whitfield dislocated his patellar; he'll have an MRI Monday and we'll see how severe that is. We got a lot of bumps and bruises but everyone else is ok. We should get some players back next week too. One should be Taylor Watson, so that would help us at the fullback position."
On what he liked about today's game:
"I thought our special teams played well. I thought the area that I was disappointed in was penalties. It really cost us in field position. I think we blocked three punts. We had a couple good returns. I thought our kickoff coverage was better. It's not where I want it but it's better than where it was last week. We had one bad snap. I thought Travis [Baltz] was MVP of the special teams. He came up with the two big field goals. I was going to punt the ball because I didn't think it was in his range but Travis came up to me and said he could make it so I said all right, took the timeout, and he was a man of his word. That one was with the wind. Then the next one was with a slight wind in his face, but he hit it well. [Ted] Townsley got a thigh strain and couldn't kickoff all week, but he kicked off and he really had a big game for us. He was really instrumental in our win."
On the quarterback situation:
"We have to see how [Danny O'Brien] is. I'm not going to say anything before I watch the tape, but I think he came in and made some plays for us. I knew he would. I was hoping that the quarterback position would be a strength for us. C. J. Brown actually stayed in after he was injured. The first play he ran the ball was when he broke his collarbone. He actually stayed in and threw the one [Kevin] Dorsey dropped and I thought was going to be a first down. He got into a situation where he got a bad snap that really stopped that drive. Otherwise, I think he was into something."
On the comparison between this year's team and last year's team:
"I think we're better than last year, no question about that. I'm interested in how good we are this week. But I think this team has a chance to be a very good team; I've said that all along. And what I see happening is just what I thought. We're trying to gain some confidence right now. We have to focus to do that. It was a worry of mine that we would just come out, lay the ball on the ground, abandon our techniques, and just think we could roll over them. I don't think we did that though. Do we need to get better? Yeah we've got to improve no question. But I'll look at the film and we'll go back to work on Monday."
On Jamarr Robinson:
"I think Jamarr missed some opportunities that we had. I'm going to have to look at the film and see, but at the end he put us in the right play, which is I think important and hasn't always been happening.
On the game:
"Normally I'm not a big fan of games like these, because sometimes I think you learn more the other way, but I think in this situation it showed us something about our players. I learned more about our team. Last week I felt I learned about our heart and we would not give up. I think that carried into this week. They just need to keep their focus and keep their work ethic."
Maryland Coaches/Players
Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator James Franklin:
On the quarterbacks:
"I feel really good about the quarterbacks we brought in here. I have said since last Spring that I think Danny [O'Brien] is one of the more advanced freshmen that I've been around. He threw the ball ten times and three of them were for touchdowns."
Defensive Coordinator Don Brown
On halftime substitutions:
"Obviously this week we were back in the mode of throwing the personnel groups in and out. We had to tweak our lineups after the half because we didn't want players getting hurt. We were able to stay aggressive after we changed the lineups even though they did a number of things formation-wise that kept us on our toes. Even after the changes, we were able to maintain our level of intensity."
On the defense's overall play:
"We knew what they were going to run route-wise. They had two or three different combinations from each of their sets, and our guys did a great job preventing deep passes and stopping their momentum. We were up in their faces the entire night, and I think that is because of the defensive line. I thought we did a great job of taking care of what we needed to take care of, and we need to continue this type of play to remain dominant throughout the season."
Senior Defensive Lineman Drew Gloster:
On the next opponent:
"Watching the West Virginia game last night, it would have been good to see them lose, but it was great to see them win. They're 2-0 and we're 2-0. There is a good rivalry between us. We are just looking forward to the opportunity to be 3-0."
On having an undefeated record:
"It is always good to be undefeated. Everybody is playing well. The offense and defense are playing well. Everybody has a lot of confidence. The coaches are happy and we are going to continue to work hard and come out to beat West Virginia."
Redshirt Freshman Running Back D.J. Adams:
On having a short rest period:
"It was a little weird because you usually get that extra day after the game to relax and get your body back together. We didn't have that, but a short week tests the guys. The test turned out pretty good. As far as our bodies go, we are in good shape."
On the score late in the game:
"I think it was good because we were able to open the playbook. If the score was tight, we would have been restricted to what we could have called. Plus, it allowed for some new personnel to get into the game and try some different things."
On the depth at running back:
"I think we have guys who can flat-out play. We are all different, but we all complement each other. It's just a matter of time, like tonight, where we can all get into the game and take the opportunity to change the pace. We have guys who can stretch the field, push it in the middle, or even catch a ball in the flat. That makes for a great combination at running back."
On carrying the ball seven times in one drive:
"It was a little tiring, but everything was opening up for me. The offensive line was creating big holes and I just hit them hard. Everything was working on that drive, and we came away with a touchdown."
Sophomore Wide Receiver Torrey Smith:
On the margin of victory:
"It felt good, but we made a lot of mistakes. All we did was go out there and see what we need to work on. We have a lot of tuning up to do before we go out and play West Virginia."
On Coach Friedgen's expectations for this game:
"He was talking to us all week about attitude and how we approach things. I think we came out of the gate maybe even better than what he expected. He challenged us to come out and establish ourselves against some teams. It was a great team win, but at the same time we still have a lot to build on."
Senior Offensive Lineman Paul Pinegar
On the short week of practice:
"We didn't go straight into practice after the Navy game. We got a day off, but we had to pick back up on Wednesday. We looked at this game as another challenge that we had to rise to, and I think we did just that tonight."
On the offensive output:
"It was really surprising, especially since it's the most amount of points any team I've played on has scored. But when you have an offense that is clicking like we were today, it is bound to happen."
On Morgan State:
"Morgan State had some really talented guys on defense. I think the biggest thing was that we outworked them in the trenches."
Sophomore Tight End Matt Furstenburg
On the depth at Quarterback:
"I think it's a good problem to have. If anyone ever gets injured, we know we have someone who is capable of leading this offense. Plus, it leads to great competition, which makes everyone else step their game up."
Morgan State Coach Donald Hill-Eley
On today's game:
"Rough day today. We'll go back and learn from it. We've got to find a way to bring everyone together. We're still running off of two cylinders offensively. We really didn't move the ball across the 50 until we got a couple penalties to go our way. Our guys didn't quit or lay down, they kept fighting. Our hats go off to the other team, they just made their plays. [Maryland] played with a lot of enthusiasm. They wanted to come out and protect themselves and pretty much come out with the win. They did a good job on all three phases. We'll learn from it and we'll stick together as a team."
On Morgan State's penalties/turnovers:
"With a team like this, you can't turn the ball over. I think we had two or three 15 yard penalties in the first quarter. We'll get back and we'll make the adjustments from it. They were just a much better team than we were today. We have to learn to play faster and harder and make better plays."
On Maryland's penalties:
"They had penalties and we had penalties, but they made more plays than we did. So the penalties themselves didn't give us the advantage one way or the other. They made more plays between the whistle than we did."
On Maryland's defense:
"They did a good job of keeping us in front of them. They did a good job of keeping pressure on us and forcing some throws that resulted in interceptions. They did a good job on all three phases."
Morgan State Players
Sophomore Quarterback Donovan Dickerson
On the loss:
"It was tough out there today. We started off slow on offense; we had about six consecutive three and outs. You can't come out like that and expect to win. You've got to give big ups to Maryland; they made more plays than we did. Maryland came prepared today, so big ups to them."
On his own play:
"I put it all on myself. I came out a little too jittery. It took me a minute to calm down, but once I calmed down it seemed like they brought the whole house. I tried to do the best I could. The offensive line did a great job helping to pick up blitzes."
Can you benefit from a game like this?
"Of course we can. We're going to go back home tomorrow, look at the film and get everything right. We've got to move on to the next game and learn from our mistakes."
What about Maryland's defense were you trying to expose?
"We thought we could expose the secondary, but once again we really didn't have enough time to get the ball off. Maryland did a good job preparing for this game."
What do you want to learn from this game?
"We just want to go home, relax, and get these wounds healed. We're going to make our corrections and be ready for next week."
