Maryland Finishes in 11th

HANAHAN, S.C. - The Terrapins improved again as they finished the Cougar Classic in a tie for 11th place with Central Florida. Maryland used a 296 to jump two more spots in the rankings from yesterday and walked away with a three-day total of 903 (309-298-296). Five of six athletes knocked strokes off their score during the final round of competition. Junior Jessica Hollandsworth took top team honors grabbing a 26th place tie.
Two consecutive rounds of par play helped Hollandsworth scale the leader board after starting in 39th after the first 18 holes. She finished with a six-over-par 222 (78-72-72).
Sophomore Christine Shimel who led the Terps after the first two rounds of play came in a tie for 42nd, just behind senior Kerri Connolly who tied for 37th. Shimel had carded two rounds of 74 to start things off and ended with a 77. Connolly saw her best performance during the third round, using an even-par 72.
Senior Hilary Lawson and sophomore Hayley Brown rounded out the lineup. Lawson carded a 17-over-par 233 (80-78-75) and Brown registered a 20-over-par 236 (82-77-75).
The Terrapins are coming off of a successful 2010 campaign, with six top-5 finishes and a showing in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. They finished 18th at the West Regional in Stanford, Calif., led by recent graduate Carly Hunt with a 16 over-par 229.
Both Hollandsworth and Shimel were All-ACC selections last season. Hollandsworth earned two top-20 finishes and a top-10 placing in the spring. Last season Hollandsworth led Maryland at the Classic, finishing in a tie for fifth with a three-under-par 213. In her collegiate debut Shimel took three top-10 finishes earning the runner-up spot twice. With a 74.84 average she ranks second in Maryland's all-time season average record book.
Also returning for Maryland is Alexis Holmes and Lauren Varnas. Head coach Jason Rodenhaver has also added walk-on Lauren Smith to the roster.
