Terps lose 5-set heartbreaker vs. Villanova

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Maryland volleyball team lost only its second match of the season at the Villanova Classic in Philadelphia, Pa., Friday. The Terps (8-2) fell to host Villanova (9-3) Friday, 3-2, in a highly competitive five-set match which lasted over two hours. Maryland will have two more opportunities for victories when the team faces off against William & Mary and Long Island on Saturday.

Sophomore Remy McBain had another strong performance at setter, recording her fifth career double-double, fourth of the season with 40 assists and 10 digs. McBain also added nine kills, tying her career-high. Following a dominating match against Tulane last weekend, in which she finished with a personal best .750 attack percentage, junior Lisa Scott led the team with an percentage of .474. Scott's seven blocks contributed to a season-high 11 deflections for the Terps. Freshman Mary Cushman recorded a team-high 12 kills for the Terps.

After Villanova took the early set lead, the Terps and Wildcats alternated set victories until the Wildcats won the  fifth and final set, 15-12. All in all, Villanova and Maryland combined for 11 lead changes and 25 tied scores.

Maryland will look to get back to its winning ways Saturday, at 11 a.m., as the Terrapins take on William & Mary (4-5). Last season, the Tribe finished 8-11 and 10-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Maryland holds a 14-6 series lead over the Tribe, which returns four starters off its 2009 squad.

Later on Saturday, at 5 p.m., the Terps will look to add to its 2-0 series lead over Long Island. The Blackbirds finished 21-14 overall, a perfect 16-0 within the Northeast Conference and qualified for the NCAA tournament.

Following the weekend road trip, the Terps will head home for their ACC opener against Boston College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Comcast Pavilion.
