PHILADELPHIA, Pa -
In its final match of the two-day Villanova Classic in Philadelphia, Pa., the University of Maryland volleyball team avenged two earlier losses to defeat Long Island in three straight sets.
After losing in five-set heartbreakers to Villanova and William & Mary, the Terps (9-3) handled the Blackbirds (1-11) in a decisive 60 minute match in which Maryland dominated the final set, winning 25-11.
Junior Maddi Lee led Maryland with a career-high .538 attack percentage while freshman Mary Cushman recorded 10 kills to lead the Terps at the net. Lee, senior Brittany Grove and sophomore Kara Bates also added nine kills apiece to round out Maryland's top attackers. Senior libero Bethany Springer's 17 digs helped counter Long Island's scorers.
In the Villanova Classic's first match of the day, the Terps lost to the Tribe of William & Mary, 3-2.
Remy McBain recorded her sixth career double-double, fifth of the season with 44 assists and a career-high 15 digs. Junior Lisa Scott led the Terps with a .300 attack percentage. Kenning led Maryland in kills with a season-high 13. Cushman played well again on the offensive end, adding 12 kills of her own.
Just as they had the night before, the Terps battled closely throughout the match, only to lose to the Tribe in the final set, 15-10. The two teams combined for 11 lead changes and 27 tied scores.
Freshman Sarah Harper, who played in all 13 sets of the Villanova Classic, was named to the All-Tournament team. Harper, who twice this weekend broke her career-high in digs with 13 against Villanova and 14 against Long Island, proved to be a defensive asset which the Terps and head coach Tim Horsmon will continue to utilize as the season moves forward
The Terps will head home for their ACC opener against Boston College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Comcast Pavilion.
