COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team will open its 2010 home slate Friday evening against No. 16 Old Dominion. The Terps, ranked No. 2 in the Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association preseason poll, and the Monarchs will take the field at 7 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Terrapins are 2-0 heading into Friday's matchup, after taking wins last weekend in Philadelphia over No. 11 Drexel and Villanova. Senior Katie O'Donnell was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Week for her two-goal, three-assist performance over the weekend.
Maryland owns the all-time series over Monarchs, 24-22-1, but the teams are two of the most successful programs in field hockey history. Old Dominion has won the most NCAA titles with nine, while the Terps, along with North Carolina, have won six each.
Old Dominion's Beth Anders (.811) and Maryland head coach Missy Meharg (.790) have the two highest winning percentages among all active NCAA coaches.
Admission is free, as is parking after 4 p.m., for all fans wishing to attend Friday's game. The first 200 students will receive a free hot dog. Gametracker live stats will be available online at umterps.com and the game will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com.
