Junior Jessica Hollandsworth led a trio of top-20 finishing Terps in the first round of the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic as the University of Maryland women's golf team ended Sunday tied for first with North Carolina State.
Hollandsworth finished even on day one; her score of 72 tied for third overall. Sophomore Christine Shmiel ended the first of three days in North Carolina tied for eighth with a 2-over-par 74. Senior Hilary Lawson rounded out the Terps amongst the leaders, finishing tied for 17th, opening with a 77.
Maryland's 302 overall propelled the team into a two-way tie for first place with the Wolfpack of North Carolina State, led by Brittany Marchand and her 1-under finish at 71. Alex Buelow of Stetson led all golfers on Sunday with a round-best 2-under 70.
Monday's second round has been washed out. Tournament play will continue Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., weather permitting.
