GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Jill Witmer of the Maryland field hockey team scored the game-winning goal against No. 9 Wake Forest Saturday to earn the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Week honor for the second straight week. This is the third time in five weeks the league's weekly honor has belonged to the Terrapins (8-0, 2-0).
In the 5-3 win at Wake Forest, Witmer scored the Terps' third and fourth goals in the game to claim the victory. Her goals came eight minutes apart and were her seventh and eighth of the year. For the first, freshman Hayley Turner dished a one-touch pass to Witmer for the score. Minutes later, sophomore Janessa Pope found her open in the circle.
The previous week, Witmer scored twice, including the game-clinching goal, over No. 12 Boston College. She is tied for second in the league in goals scored, along with senior Katie O'Donnell.
The Terrapins play at No. 4 Princeton Tuesday night. They will take the field against the Tigers at 6 p.m. in the Class of 1952 Stadium. Maryland owns the all-time series over Princeton, 14-4-1, winning the last 13 meetings. The two teams met twice last season, with the Terps winning both. On Oct. 7, Maryland won 3-2 in overtime in College Park and in the NCAA Semifinals on Nov. 20, the Terrapins won 7-5.
The game will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com and live stats will be available here.
