COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland water polo team's season doesn't start until February, but there is still plenty going on with the Terps.

The strength and conditioning staff is running the team through off-season workouts. Right now the squad is lifting three times a week and going through conditioning drills another three times.

News and Notes:

  • The Terps named Meghan Powers a team captain. Powers, a senior from Los Altos, Calif., is an attacker in her fourth season with the Terps. Last year she saw action in 25 games and tallied 11 goals and four assists.

  • New Maryland assistant coach Serela Kay headlined an impressive USA team in the FINA 30+ championships. Kay is a former National Team member and in starting her first season as the Terps assistant coach. The USA team, the Olympic Club, finished the tournament 4-0, taking home the gold.

  • Former Terp standout Blaise Stanicic competed for Croatia earlier this month in the European Water Polo Championships. Stanicic had two goals against Greece, who placed second in the tournament. At Maryland Stanicic ranks in the top 10 in five different all-time categories including first in career assists (81) and tied for second in all-time points (192).

  • Another former Terp, Elizabeth Hopkins, recently joined the professional team Club Esportiu Mediterrani in Barcelona, Spain. Hopkins ranks first in career points (205) and shots (530) for the Terps, and second in career goals (150) and assists (55).
