Terps 7th in Director's Cup Standings

    CLEVELAND - On the strength of a solid fall, Maryland ranks seventh in the current Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings which were released Wednesday.

    The Terps have 273 points. Stanford leads the way with 399 and North Carolina is second (380).

    Ohio State (369), Florida State (361.50) and Penn State (300) round out the top five.

    The ACC has set the pace heading into the winter championships by having five of its schools finish in the top 10. Duke is ninth and Virginia ranks 10th.

    All eight fall NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: men's cross country - Oklahoma State; women's cross country - Villanova (Pa.); women's field hockey - Maryland; women's soccer - Notre Dame; men's soccer - Akron; men's water polo - Southern California; women's volleyball - Penn State; FCS football - Eastern Washington; FBS football - Auburn.

    The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.

    Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.

    The first Division I winter standings will be released Thursday, March 24, 2011.
