COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
A terrible neighborhood tragedy has hit close to home for the Maryland Terrapins.
The football and men's lacrosse teams, who serve as Big Brothers at Hyattsville Elementary School, are asking Terrapin fans to assist the Zelayas which lost two family members.
Two children (9-year old Kimberly and 13-year old Kelli) perished in a fire which occurred on Jan. 19 in the 4700 block of 40th Avenue in Hyattsville, Md. The children attended the school and were close friends of the players' 'Little Brothers.'
Spearheaded by football players Zachariah Kerr, Kerry Boykins and Justin Anderson, the teams are collecting donations (see list below) for the family throughout next week.
On Friday, Feb. 4, members of both teams will deliver the clothing to Hyattsville Elementary School when they meet with their little brothers.
Donations will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in both the Academic Centers of the Gossett Team House and Comcast Center. Dahlia Levin will accept donations at Gossett and Laura Fellon will be the point person at Comcast (first floor).
Levin contact info - 301-314-9291 - dlevin@umd.edu
Fellon contact info - 301-314-7044 - lfellon@umd.edu
A tax deductible donation may also be made to the Zelaya Family Fund. Checks may be made payable to the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation, 5004 42nd Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781. Please make note that the donation is for the Zelaya Family Fund.
Donations can also be made at www.hycdc.org.
