GREENBELT, Md. - The University of Maryland held its annual football awards banquet Sunday afternoon, capping the 2010 season, one which ended with a victory in the Military Bowl.
The Terps bid farewell to 22 players, including the 16 seniors on last season's roster.
Linebacker Alex Wujciak, a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer, was named the team MVP after leading the squad in tackles (117) for the third straight season, while Torrey Smith, a 2010 first team all-league pick, secured three honors - offensive MVP (also in 2009), the C.P. "Lefty" McIntosh Public Service Award and offensive captain.
Former head coach Ralph Friedgen, who attended the banquet, called Wujciak the "heart and soul of the team."
Another first team All-ACC performer, Kenny Tate was named the defensive MVP after registering 100 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and a league-high four forced fumbles.
Davin Meggett, the team's leading rusher (720 yards), was tabbed the most improved offensive player. Antwine Perez, who had a team-high 11 passes defended (three interceptions/eight pass breakups), was the most improved defensive player.
Travis Baltz, a four-year starter at punter and the No. 1 place-kicker last season, hauled in two awards. He was the top special teams performer and the senior with the highest grade-point average.
Maryland sideline reporter Tim Strachan was the master of ceremonies for the event which served as a farewell to Friedgen, who spent 10 years as head coach of his alma mater.
"I want to thank my family, the coaches and all the staff in the Gossett Team House," said Friedgen, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year. "I also want to thank the players, their families, the fans and all the alumni. I feel really blessed."
