GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior Christine Shimel climbed 10 places on the leaderboard Monday to finish tied for sixth and keep the Maryland women's golf team in contention at the Lady Pirate Invitational at the par-72, 5,980-yard Greenville Country Club. The Terps, the defending tournament champions, are in third place after two rounds of play.
Shimel opened the second round in a tie for 16th after carding a 2-over 74. The Kennett Square, Pa., native concluded the second round with a 4-under 68 besting her season low-18 score by four strokes, and moved into a tie for sixth. Shimel carded 10 birdies over the two rounds which tied for the tournament lead.
Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy continued her strong play Monday. Vongphoumy is tied for 10th after firing a 2-under 70 in the first round and 3-over 75 in the second round.
Senior Jessica Hollandsworth carded a 1-over 73 in both rounds to finish tied for 14th. Junior Hayley Brown is tied for 58th with a 155 (76-79), and freshman Emily Gimpel fired a 158 (77-81) to finish tied for 79th.
The final round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The Terps trail East Carolina by five strokes entering the final round. East Carolina carded a 7-over 583 to lead UNC Greensboro by two shots.
Individually, UNC Greensboro's Fanny Cnops and UNC Wilmington's Laverry Kumar are tied for first with a 5-under 139.
