COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The third-ranked Maryland field hockey team will head south this weekend to battle No. 2 North Carolina Saturday for first in the ACC. The Terps and the Heels will meet at 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The game will be shown live online on ESPN3.com.

Scouting The Terps
• Maryland is currently ranked No. 3 in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches poll. The Terrapins are coming off of their seventh national title, ninth ACC title, and a 23-1 overall record last year. They are ranked No. 2 in the latest RPI, released Oct. 18.

• Most recently, the Terps beat Towson, 6-0, Wednesday night behind goals from six different players. Lindsey Puckett scored her first goal of the year and Danielle Kauffman notched the first of her career. Steffi Schneid earned her first career point with an assist on Puckett's goal. Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek, Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer also scored.
• The Terrapins took 23 shots to Towson's one and only allowed two penalty corners. Maryland had 10 corners.
• The Terps have now been ranked in the top three in the country for 73 consecutive weeks, dating back to Nov. 2, 2004, when they were ranked No. 5.
Scouting The Tar Heels
• North Carolina is 15-1 overall and 4-0 in the ACC heading into Saturday's game. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 2 in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll.

• Most recently, the Tar Heels beat James Madison, 3-0, last weekend. The Dukes held the Heels scoreless until the 45th minute, when Elizabeth Stephens scored. Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany and Kelsey Kolojejchick scored in the 61st and 63rd minutes, respectively, for the win.
• North Carolina owns the all-time series, 23-32.

• Maryland and North Carolina have met for the last two NCAA titles, each coming away with one.

• Last year, the Terrapins beat the Tar Heels 5-2 for the ACC crown in Winston-Salem, N.C., then met them again for the NCAA title two weeks later. Junior Megan Frazer scored the title-clinching goal for the Terps with 2:10 left in the second overtime period. Play the Best
Due to being in the toughest conferences in the nation, the Terrapins play one of the strongest schedules in the country.
• Four of the six ACC schools are in the top 20 of this week's Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. North Carolina (15-1, 4-0) is ranked No. 2, while Duke (10-5, 2-2) comes in ranked No. 5. Boston College (9-6, 1-3) comes in at No. 12. Virginia (7-10, 0-3) and Wake Forest (7-8, 0-3) are receiving votes.
• The Terps will battle nine of the 16 teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. So far, Maryland is 6-2 against those teams.
• Maryland will play 12 of the 20 teams ranked in the preseason top 20 and is currently 7-2 vs preseason ranked teams.

Missy Meharg
The 2010 NFHCA National Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year, Missy Meharg returns for her 24th season at the helm of the successful Terrapin field hockey program. Her current career record is 426-104-9 (.799). Below is a breakdown of just a few of her highlights since she took the reins in 1988:

• Three Terrapins were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team - Megan Frazer, Harriet Tibble, and Jill Witmer.
Terps Picked to Finish No. 2 in ACC
Maryland was picked to finish second in the ACC, as voted by the league's six head coaches.
• The Terrapins received two of the six first-place votes.
• The Terps have won the last three straight ACC championships (2008, 2009, 2010), and nine overall.
• North Carolina, last year's NCAA and ACC runner-up, was picked to win the league with four of the first-place votes. Virginia came in third and Duke, Wake Forest and Boston College rounded out the standings, respectively.
Home Sweet Home
Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage.
• The Terps are 103-10 (.912) all-time at the Complex.
• The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 18 of Maryland's NCAA Tournament games, including two Final Fours (2007, 2010). The Terrapins are 17-1 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field.
Pack the House
• The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season.
• An NCAA record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex last November.
• The Terrapins have led the ACC in attendance for four straight years. In 2010, Maryland averaged over 700 fans per game and 10,572 fans saw the Terps play during the year.
Terps in Openers
• Maryland is 33-3-2 in season openers and the Terps have won their last 15 straight.
• The Terrapins haven't opened the season at home in the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex since 2000. They've opened 23 of their 36 seasons on the road.
• With their win over Michigan last weekend, the Terps are 9-0 in home openers at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex and have outscored their opponents 37-6 in those nine games.

Meharg Named ESPNU/ESPN The Magazine Top 20 Recruiter
Terrapin head coach Missy Meharg was named one of college athletics' top 20 recruiters by ESPNU/ESPN The Magazine in January.
