GUADALAJARA, Mexico -
Terrapin greats Katie O'Donnell and Paula Infante faced off Friday in the Pan Am Games, as the USA beat Chile, 2-1, in Guadalajara, Mexico. O'Donnell started for Team USA, while Infante played for her native country, Chile.
One of the most dangerous players on the field in her years as a Terp, O'Donnell was once again an offensive productor in Friday's win. After no score at the break, O'Donnell came out pressuring. She made her way into the circle and found Shannon Taylor for the score, while she notched an assist on the play that gave USA a 1-0 lead.
After the Americans took the lead, O'Donnell stepped up her pressure even more and drew a penalty stroke. Caroline Nichols took the stroke for the U.S. and made it for a 2-0 USA lead.
O'Donnell scored in Team USA's 5-0 win over tournament-host Mexico Wednesday afternoon. With the win Friday, the Americans will now take on Cuba Sunday. With a win over the Cubans, the USA will advance to the semifinals as the No. 1 team from Pool A and will face the No. 2 ranked team from Pool B. The winner of the Pan Am Games earns its bid to the 2012 Olympics in London.
Both O'Donnell and Infante led their teams to two NCAA titles. Each won the Honda Sports Award twice in their respective careers. O'Donnell won in 2009 and 2010, while Infante won in 2005 and 2006.
