GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy finished second and senior Jessica Hollandsworth finished tied for third to lead the Maryland women's golf team to its first championship of the fall season at the UNCG/Starmount Fall Classic at Starmount Country Club. The Terps finished with a 901 (303-308-290), seven strokes better than East Tennessee State.
"It's a great team win," said director of intercollegiate golf Jason Rodenhaver. "To come back from five shots down and win by seven [strokes] is pretty dominating."
Vongphoumy carded a 1-under 71 in the final round, her lowest 18-hole score of the season, to finish second with a 221 (76-74-71), which is five strokes better than her previous 54-hole low (226).
Hollandsworth and junior Christine Shimel earned their first top 10 finishes of the fall. Hollandsworth finished tied for third after carding the lowest score of the final round, a 2-under 70, to finish with a 223 (74-79-70). Shimel fired an even-par 72 for a three-day total of 224 (75-77-72).
"I'm thrilled to see Juliet (Vongphoumy) finish second in only her third collegiate event, and I'm glad to see Jessica (Hollandsworth) and Christine (Shimel) get back on track," said Rodenhaver.
Junior Hayley Brown finished in a tie for 25th after shooting a 5-over 77 for a total of 235 (80-78-77), and freshman Emily Gimpel tied for 34th with a 237 (78-80-79).
Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen won the individual championship with a 218 (75-69-74).
