COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland water polo team is in the midst of its off-season program. A member of the squad will be writing a blog each week as the team gears up for the 2012 season.
The team completed its 10th week of off-season workouts Friday.
This week's blog features 'A Day in the Life' of senior goalkeeper and team captain Shelby Reyes.
The shrill of my alarm clock goes off, I roll over and shut it off...5:50 AM. Everything is packed and ready to go because without coffee I cannot function that early in the morning. I throw on my weight clothes, grab a yogurt, and head down stairs to scoot with Tini (Christine Goestch) over to the Varsity Team House. Once we get the music going and Brent (our strength coach) compliments Simone Lewis and I on our "wonderful" singing I know the day has begun. After weights and a team lake run we get in the pool to play polo! As a goal keeper the majority of my time, before the team shoots/plays, is focused on leg strength and reaction time.
After practice, I go over to Gossett where I print out my slides for class and go to physical therapy where Kala and Phil kick my butt some more. Then it is time to start classes for the day, but not before I run by my favorite healthy food spot at the Co-Op and grab a wrap and a coffee to go. Fuel for the day!!! Back to back classes are made more bearable with a friendly face around and lucky for me I have Simone Lewis. Then Ariel Oakley picks me up and we scoot to our next class across campus. Next, I get a little down time before my last class of the day where I normally try to catch up on some reading, but once school is done for the day I have to throw on my business attire and head over to work. I work at a psychology lab in the Bio-Psych Building and help out in the evenings occasionally with assessments we run on undergraduates.
My time working in the psychology lab has definitely helped me further my future. I recently went to Toronto, Canada with my lab to the annual Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy (ABCT) convention. All of us, including my mentor and director, took a WONDERFUL 12 hour bus ride there and back. Boy I can't wait to do that again! Not. My lab presented posters on our research and our director, Dr. Andres De Los Reyes, was honored with an award. Anyways, I loved Toronto but the cold weather was not conducive to the thin skin I developed from growing up in Miami, Florida. Every time I feel like I have finally become adjusted to the cold again I find myself in 6 sweaters and a scarf while everyone else is in shorts.
Practice to therapy to some grub to class to work to TV (I have to have my down time) to homework to bed. That is my average day...except for Fridays. I learned freshmen year to never have class that day; it's Friday FunDay! My days may be long, but I would not give up any part of my day.
Peace, Love, TERPS!!!
