COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland water polo team is in the midst of its off-season program. A member of the squad will be writing a blog each week as the team gears up for the 2012 season.
The team completed its 11th week of off-season workouts Friday.
This week's blog features 'A Day in the Life' of senior defender and team captain Christine Goetsch.
The weekend is officially over. 9am Monday morning, my alarm goes off. It is the start to a new week. A start to one week closer to the kick off of our 2012 water polo season. I roll out of bed, head to the kitchen to make some coffee and oatmeal, and then open my laptop to finish my homework before my 11am Child Development class.
10:45am it's time to leave for class. I say goodbye to my roommates Hanna Zimmer and Sarah Castille and head out the door to my scooter which teammate Katie Ermakova named Bumble Bee for me. I drive off to class in the Benjamin Building where I sit for an hour and a half anxiously awaiting for it to end so I can hurry over to practice.
12:30pm I finally arrive at the pool for practice. I am fifteen minutes late due to class, and I run down the stairs while stuffing my face with snacks to fuel me for our three hour practice. Practice starts with video in the pool classroom. Coach Serela is showing clips from our 2011 Eastern Conference Championship game when we beat Princeton in double overtime. When I walk in the room everyone cheers as they have just watched the winning goal be scored to take us to the semi finals. What a great way to start practice off! After video, fellow Captain Shelby Reyes and I have a short meeting with Coach Carl and Coach Serela before heading on deck for team stretching and dry land. Once we are all warmed up Coach Serela gives me the swim warm up for the team and we all line up on the edge of the pool. The clock hits the start of a new minute and I yell, "Ready, Attack!" as we all enter the pool for warm up. After a solid warm up, swim set, and passing drills, we finally move into the fun stuff- shooting and front court! On Mondays, a lot of time is devoted to shooting and front court. Sophomore Center Nicole Tobin and I battle it out in front of the cage in our front court drills.
As the clock hits 3pm, it is time to clean up the pool, have a short team meeting, and call it up. The team call goes to Taylor Reeves for making some stellar blocks in the cage during front court.
Monday is almost done. I head home after practice and change into nice clothes before heading over to my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, for Monday night dinner and our weekly Chapter Meeting. 8pm rolls around and I find myself walking home from Alpha Chi Omega, passing the time as I walk by calling my Dad and Mom to check in on how everything is going back home in California. I remind them how excited I am to see them both over Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I am finally home, it is 8:15pm and before I hop into bed for 6am practice on Tuesday, I make sure my homework is all finished, and yes, I squeeze in at least one show of HGTV. My day is done, it's been a successful one. Time for a good night of sleep, because tomorrow, we are hitting the weight room, running to the lake and working on power plays.
Ready...Attack!
