Where Are They Now: Herb Buonviri

In an ongoing series of Where Are They Now articles on Maryland track and field alumni, office intern Ashlyn Sinclair visited recently with former thrower Herb Buonviri.
It's 1968 and Maryland had just swept the men's shot put at the ACC Championship Meet. Herb Buonviri stands next to teammates Jack Hanley and Gary Parsons on the podium as they accept their medals, letting the rest of the ACC know that Maryland controlled the throws that season.
Buonviri lists that as his proudest moment during his Maryland track and field career. It was a career that he says helped give him life lessons he's used beyond college.
"Coach Kehoe taught me determination and confidence," he says. "By personal example, he showed us how to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles."
After graduating from Maryland with a bachelor's degree in physical science that focused on math, chemistry and physics in 1969, Buonviri became a high school math teacher.
His true calling has been abundantly sprinkled with "kind words spoken and written by former students and parents."
The three greatest moments in his life came after his marriage to Lynn Joyce in 1986, and were the births of his children Andy (38, and a Maryland alumnus as well), Nate (36) and Katie (31).
Currently, Buonviri is retired and has time for what he always wanted to achieve, finding more time to exercise. His exhaustive workout routine consists of biking over two hours a day, lifting weights for an hour, splitting wood by hand and pushing a wheelbarrow full of dirt.
At 65, exercising keeps Buonviri feeling like a million bucks. He has already biked an impressive 30,000 miles just in his first two years of retirement. That is approximately 1-1/4 times around the earth.
Buonviri has recently looked up his old teammates using Facebook, and was able to catch up and reminisce with old track stories.
