PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Kesley Cofsky and Abigail Adams finished first and second in the all-around with 38.550 and 38.500, respectively and the University of Maryland gymnastics team topped Pittsburgh thanks to an overall score of 194.225 Saturday night in the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
“Overall it was a good night,” said head coach Brett Nelligan. “Anytime you can walk away from a tough opponent with a win on the road, you have to consider it a good night...Tonight we answered a big question, is this team capable of going 195? We are and it's time for us to put it all together.”
Katy Dodds won vault with a career-high 9.900, which was the highest score of either team on the night. Ally Krikorian followed with a season-best 9.850 and Cofsky finished third with a 9.825. As a team, the Terps scored a meet-high 49.100 on vault.
“Our vault team was outstanding tonight,” said Nelligan. “We've known we have the potential to be great on vault. It's nice to see it finally come together.”
On bars, Adams finished a close second to Pitt's Alyssa Adrian with a 9.775 for second in the event. Cofsky and Kaitlin Joseph rounded out Maryland's top three gymnasts on uneven bars as Maryland finished the event with a 48.575 to the Panthers' 48.400.
Adams led the Terps on balance beam with a 9.875, the senior's seventh plus-9.8 score on the season. Elizabethe Manzi's career-high 9.825 gave the freshman sole possession of second place on beam and Pittsburgh's Jenifer Liberato hit a 9.800, good enough for third.
“Abbey and Lizzy's beam routines were key,” said Nelligan. “They solidified the win for us.”
Dodds posted a 9.800 to lead all gymnasts on floor exercise while Cofsky and newcomer Gabby Swart earned scores of 9.750 and 9.625, respectively, to fill out Maryland's top trio in the event.
With the dual win, Maryland is now an undefeated 3-0 in meets against East Atlantic Gymnastics League opponents.
The Terrapins will host a quad-meet Friday with Penn State, Rutgers and William & Mary. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. at the Comcast Center.
