SAN DIEGO - The Maryland water polo team started slow in its season opener Saturday before picking up steam, but it wasn't enough as the Terps lost to 11th-ranked UC-Irvine, 8-4, in the opening round of the Triton Invitational.
However, Maryland (1-1) rallied in the afternoon session, dominating Somona State, 12-3, to earn a split in the day's action.
Allison Campbell, the team's leading point producer last season, had an impressive offensive day posting seven goals, including all four in the loss to UC-Irvine.
"We had some mental mistakes at the beginning of the first game, but we never stopped competing" head coach Carl Salyer said.
The Terps trailed 4-2 after the opening period, but held the high-powered UC-Irvine (4-1) attack in check the rest of the way. Maryland cut the deficit to 7-4 in the second half, but was unable to get closer.
"Our defense was good all day," Salyer said. "I thought that propelled us in the second game. We had a good counterattack and finished our opportunities against Somona unlike in the first game."
Campbell had a game-high three goals against Somona State (2-9) with Ally Beck tallying two. Freshmen Maddie Murphy and Katie Ermakova added two goals apiece for the Terps who jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
It marked the fewest goals allowed by the Terps since a 9-3 win over Gannon on Feb. 13, 2010.
The Terps face 17th-ranked UC-San Diego at 10:40 a.m. PST Sunday and play either Cal State East Bay or UC Santa Barbara in the afternoon.
