Terps Drop Two on Final Day at Triton

Feb. 13, 2011

SAN DIEGO - The Maryland water polo team battled on the final day of the Triton Invitational, but it wasn't enough for the Terrapins who fell to No. 17 and tournament host UC San Diego, 9-5, and Cal State East Bay, 13-11, on Sunday.

UC San Diego (6-3) got three goals apiece from Felicia Orozco and Hanalei Crowell in a balanced offensive attack.

The Tritons jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead and the Terps could not muster enough offense in the final 16 minutes to mount a comeback. Five Terps had one goal each and Shelby Reyes turned aside nine UCSD shots.

With both teams receiving votes in the most recent national poll, the Maryland-Cal State East Bay figured to be a hotly contested and the game went down to the wire.

The Terps trailed 5-2 in the early going, but a goal by Ally Beck late in the first half tied the game at 6-all.

Maryland (1-3) rallied again in the second half, tying the game at 11-all midway through fourth quarter on a goal by Christine Goetsch, but CSUEB scored the go-ahead goal minutes later and iced the game with 45 seconds to go on a penalty shot by Chelsie Bryan.

"We had missed opportunities in both games," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We played really good defense, but just had some mental lapses. We need to do a better job of finishing."

Freshman Katie Ermakova scored a career-best four goals against CSUEB (4-5) and Reyes had six saves. Beck had three goals and Goetsch added two.

The Terps will serve as host to the four-team Maryland Invitational next weekend. George Washington, Bucknell, Wagner and Maryland will play games on Saturday and Sunday.
