COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Abbey Adams and freshman Katy Dodds earned individual honors on floor and vault, respectively, and the University of Maryland gymnastics team placed second in its first home quad meet of the season Friday with a team score of 195.300. No. 18 Penn State won the meet with a 196.600 while East Atlantic Gymnastics League rival Rutgers finished in third at 192.975 and William & Mary rounded out the teams in fourth with 186.975.
In the win, Maryland earned its first score of 195 or greater on the season. It was their best score since hitting a 195.825 last season on Mar. 16 against George Washington.
"[195] is where we need to be, 195 or better," said head coach Brett Nelilgan. "Without little mistakes, we would have been pushing 196 this week."
The Terps remain undefeated in the conference, improving to 4-0 within the EAGL.
"We want to make a statement when we get to the EAGL Championship that we're one of the top teams," said Nelligan. "To do that, I feel like we need to walk into that meet undefeated in the conference."
The Terps began on vault, earning a night-best 49.150 thanks to Dodds' event-winning 9.925 on vault and Adams' 9.850. Kesley Cofsky and Ally Krikorian also contributed with scores of 9.800.
Adams led the Terps with scores of 9.850 on both the uneven bars and balance beam Friday, though she saved her best performance for floor exercise in the final rotation.
After Dodds landed with a 9.775, Adams rounded out Maryland's top gymnasts on the floor with a night-best 9.925, tying her season-high mark.
Led by all-around winner Sharaya Musser (39.575), the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions spoiled Maryland's return to College Park after spending the past month on the road with meets at Michigan, Chapel Hill and, most recently, Pittsburgh.
"It would have been nice to beat Penn State, but they did what they had to do," said Nelligan. "If they made a mistake, though, we were right there waiting for them. We'll get another shot at them at their place in two weeks."
The Terps will remain in College Park for their second consecutive quad meet, against Bridgeport, Temple and William & Mary for heading north to University Park, Pa. to challenge North Carolina State and the Nittany Lions.
