COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Coming off of its seventh NCAA title in program history, the Maryland field hockey team announced today the addition of three incoming freshmen to the squad. The class of 2015 will assist the Terps in carrying on their tradition of success.
This year's class includes three members of the U.S. National team pipeline system - Maxine Fluharty (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Technical), Katie Gerzabek (Springfield, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), and Kasey Tapman (Pocomoke City, Md./Pocomoke).
Two members of the class, Fluharty and Gerzabek, have long had ties to the Maryland field hockey family. Their mothers, Kathleen (Kochmansky) Fluharty and Jackie (Grady) Gerzabek both played USA Field Hockey with Maryland head coach Missy Meharg. Fluharty was inducted into Northwestern's Hall of Fame in 2004 and Gerzabek was an All-American at Old Dominion.

International Experience: Member of High Performance hockey since 2006...current member of U.S. Under-21 team...played with Under-17 team in World Cup qualifier in Uruguay in 2007...member of Under-16 team from 2006-08...competed in the 2007 Junior Olympics.
About Fluharty: Starting forward at Sussex Technical from 2007-10...First Team All-American in 2009 and 2010...First Team All-Conference all four years...First Team All-State in lacrosse and field hockey in 2008, 2009, 2010...State Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010...team won state championship in 2009 and 2010...career goals and assists leader at Sussex Technical with 120 goals and 61 assists...also scored 270 goals for school's lacrosse team...played for her mother for Sussex Technical lacrosse team....also played for Love it Oranje and Jersey Intensity.
Meharg on Fluharty: "Maxine is pure MARYLAND. As an elite level US Junior National Team attacker, Max has prepared and is ready to step in and play our fast pace, highly attacking style. For a young player Maxine understands the transition game. She is a ruthless goal scorer and she thrives on pressure situations. Maxine is potentially one of the fastest players in the world which carries a level of continued excitement for the Maryland hockey fan base."
Fluharty on coming to Maryland: "I am so excited to be a part of the Terp Family! Since the moment I stepped on the Maryland campus I felt welcomed and as if I fit perfectly. Every day following my verbal commitment I have felt more sure and secure that I made the best decision possible for me. I feel as though my opportunities are already expanding so I can't wait to see what it will be like when I am actually there. Go TERPS!"

Katie Gerzabek

International Experience: Member of USA Indoor National team...played for championship team at High Performance in 2010...member of U.S. Under-19 team...twice competed In Junior Olympics with Under-17 team.
About Gerzabek: Starting forward for the Academy of Notre Dame for all four years...also played basketball and lacrosse...team won league championship all four years for first time in school history...three-time First Team All-Interac, All-Main Line and All-Southeast PA...2010 Delaware County Player of the Year...named a 2009 Second Team All-American...also played for Richard and Jun Kentwell for WC Eagles in Spring City, Pa....team won National Field Hockey Festival 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010...team also won National Indoor Tournament in 2010.
Academy of Notre Dame coach Adele Williams: "Katie has been an instrumental part of the team's four league championships. She has proven to be an all-around player who also leads by example both on and off the field. Katie has had an incredible high school career for The Academy of Notre Dame where she has raised the expectations of the game for the players to follow. I am extremely proud of her as a person and am thrilled to have had the opportunity to coach her. I am excited that she has chosen The University of Maryland where she will have the opportunity to excel in both academics and athletics."
Meharg on Gerzabek: "Katie is a beautiful hockey player and student-athlete of the game. She is highly technical and tactically aware, which will make her transition to Maryland hockey very smooth. As a member of the U.S. Uunder-19 National Team, Katie is more than ready to make the transition to ACC and NCAA Division 1A hockey. As a member of our US Indoor national team Katie understands the necessary intensity associated with high level hockey and she loves it."
Gerzabek on coming to Maryland: "I chose Maryland because of the challenge to be a part of a championship team. When I visited the campus, I felt comfortable with the team and coaching staff. It's a perfect fit between academics and athletics."

Kasey Tapman
Forward/Midfield
Pocomoke City, Md. Pocomoke
International Experience: Member of USA hockey's Futures developmental program since 2007. Competes in Hockey, Basketball and Softball year round.
About Tapman: Played all four years at Pocomoke...MVP and captain...Heisman Award finalist...2010 Offensive Player of the Year and Fall Athlete of the Year...named First Team All-State in 2010 and First Team All-Bayside in 2008, 2009, 2010...team won state championship in 2007, 2008, 2009...2007 Rookie of the Year...also played basketball and softball...basketball team won states in 2008, while softball won in 2009...played for Shorefield Hockey since 2006...team won its pool in 2010 National Festival in Arizona.
Meharg on Tapman: "Kasey is `untapped' Tapman. As a three sport varsity athlete since her freshman year at Pocomoke, we are so excited to mentor and develop Kasey at the next level. At 5'10", Kasey's long lever passing and tackling skills will be a solid strength for her and MARYLAND. Kasey is a "nose to the ground" student athlete who works exceedingly hard in all aspects of her life. She will join Pocomoke HS teammate, feisty forward, Kirstie Dennig as a member of our 2011 team."
Tapman on coming to Maryland:"I'm very excited to play at the next level and be a part of the No. 1 team in the country. I'm looking forward to contributing to the team."
